With major fashion houses releasing their own street-wear brands, their retail cousins need to think of innovative ideas to match the competition. Beck and Hersey clothing has made branded clothes functional, stylish and comfortable to wear, while still maintaining a freshness of design.

Bored with high street fashion?

People are getting bored of the couture that looks good on magazine covers and runways, but finds itself out of place in the concrete jungle. Beck and Hersey clothing has understood this need and incorporated fashion, style and designer apparel into everyday wear. Some of the brand’s most popular designs include the popular vintage Beck and Hersey logo t-shirt.

Beck and Hersey has a wide range of clothing for men, including jeans, knitwear, t-shirts, coats and hoodies that can be worn as casual wear. Fashionable street-wear epitomises the ethos of the Beck and Hersey line. Wearing Beck and Hersey attire seeks to emphasise masculinity with its understated, yet cool colours and materials.

Though Beck and Hersey started its range of clothing based on urban influences and strong graphics the company has since expanded its range of designs to include other lines, such as denim, jackets and casual trousers in continental Europe and the United Kingdom They also have a wide range of hats, scarves, and other accessories for men. With affordable pricing and designs that stand out Beck and Hersey clothing is something men can wear with ease and confidence.

Like all branded clothing, Beck and Hersey also have a range of summer, winter, beach and sportswear collections, the difference lies in their affordability and distinctive minimalist design, which makes the basics stand out; the brand is stocked by all major retailers.

A fashion student has won acclaim for her designs by revisiting the fashions of the 1940s.

Janine Clark was crowned Alfa Romeo Young Fashion Designer of the Year 2012 at a recent fashion show at St Andrew’s in Edinburgh.

Designers were asked to focus on the theme of recovering the past and try and translate the Alfa Romeo brand into their creations in a bid to win the accolade, and kick start their careers in the world of fashion. Janine was one of five people who took part in the competition. Janine and those who took part had to incorporate the theme, as well as some of the Alfa Romeo colours into their designs to net the prize. Needless to say, the competition was fierce.

The twenty-two year old, who is a BA Fashion undergraduate student, created four pieces for the show, based on 1940s silhouettes.

She was awarded the accolade by fashion expert Brix Smith-Start and the prize included £1000. The award ceremony and catwalk show was hosted in partnership with the St Andrews Charity Fashion Show.

Although all we seem to be getting at the moment is rain and cold, there sunshine is on its way. This summer’s fashion focus is all about bright and neon colours, quirky patterns and lots and lots of handbags. Handbags are the key fashion accessory this summer and here are a few hints and tips to ensure that you are “in with the trends”:

Modern Embellishment

This trend seems to be growing quickly and emerging from nowhere. Bags this summer are becoming a lot more sophisticated and are often decorated with lots of diamonds, jewels and bling. With this trend though, you need to be careful not to over-do it, the key to pulling this look of successfully is remembering that less is more.

Animal skin

Leopard print was all the range last season, however we have moved on from this. When it comes to bags this summer, animal skin is in! Whether it is snake skin or crocodile skin, as long as it is wild, but classy, then it will sure grab you some attention! Again, like with the ‘Modern Embellishment’, less is more. You should try more subtle and neutral colours for a more expensive and up-market look.

Invisible

We have witnessed a new sporting theme coming about in our spring clothes and it is set to be pretty big for the summer too. To go along with this, many designers are making their bags “see-through” with a sporting twist. Clear bowling bags and gym bags will be everywhere this summer and although it is a strange trend, it is sure to be a big hit!

Pastel shades

Gorgeous pastel and ice cream colours have proven to be a favourite when it came to handbag colours this spring, and the trend will be sure to carry on all through this summer! The colours are easy to wear and will go with all most any outfit. This is a perfect summer handbag style and is especially good for those who like to follow the fashion trends without making too much of a statement.

The high street in Britain has been an important feature of the country’s towns and cities since the 1960s, but the turn of the century saw it begin to take on a completely different role. It has long been the case that fashion is dictated from the catwalk. After seeing trends and designs from the high fashion designers, high street brands would often follow suit, as well as offering customers with a lower budget the chance to follow the latest fashions. It is over the last ten years that this process has really increased in pace, with some high street brands, such as Lipsy clothing, offering high fashion trends for a fraction of the price just moments after they have been seen on the runway.

It is through collaboration that brands on the high street have really begun to take fashion to another level. By inviting a guest designer from the world of high fashion to design a collection that is available in a high street store, the lower end brands can offer their consumers a piece of designer clothing, but at a much more affordable price.

It is through these collaborations and the offering of high fashion inspired styles that the high street in Britain has managed to retain a healthy following.

With so much inspiration from eras gone by, the 2000s have struggled to develop a specific identity of clothing style. But it is from the high street that individuals are able to embrace one of the most prevalent trends of the 21st century; showing off their individuality. Whether it is done through modifying vintage and mixing with current season garments, or taking some inspiration from high fashion and interpreting it in a completely individual way, the 2000s will be known for their ability to let people express themselves.

As we look forward to the first signs of spring, it is time to shed the heavy, dark layers of winter and don some cheery, colourful clothes instead. Men’s fashions are boldly stepping up this year with a wide range of options that are sure to appeal to varied tastes. This is about more than just clothing, a few trendy accessories and accent pieces are also top on the lists.

Starting with colours, top choices for men this spring include bright oranges and sunny yellows paired with neutral tans or darker shades. Bring in a sense of calm and freshness with lighter blue tones, and round them off with khaki colours, or greys.

When the warmer weather arrives, we all seem to breathe a huge collective sigh of relief as we unwind and relax. Clothing choices can also reflect this attitude, by making use of breezy linens, light jackets and soft tailored pieces. At this time, blazers can be a little shorter, while trouser cuffs are rolled up to the ankle for a carefree look.

To add a bit of punch, pick a check-patterned suit in subtle colours, or even monotone shades, and put it together with a lighter solid shirt and dark brogues. The final result should look smart but laid-back at the same time. Prints on suits, shirts and pants are big this season! If a patterned suit sounds like a bit much, then try incorporating small-patterned accessories instead. A patterned tie, silk scarf, or a pocket square, for example, are perfect for adding subtle points of interest to a look without over-powering it. Wear a smart hat of your choice and finish with sunglasses for some practical, sun-safe style.

Fashion Fringe has gained a new Chair for the next two years in none other than Burberry’s Chief Creative Officer, Christopher Bailey. In his new role, Bailey will be responsible for judging, selection of candidates, and mentoring the three lucky finalists as well as the winner. Fashion Fringe is the focal UK platform for unearthing fresh, new talent in the local fashion world.

Fashion Fringe works by providing a number of promising new designers with a venue through which they can showcase their skills and work. It was originally started in 2003 by fashion journalist, Colin McDowell, who has long garnered international acclaim. McDowell worked in conjunction with IMG Fashion Worldwide, to give birth to Fashion Fringe, with the main goal of helping emerging designers to break into the industry. More specifically, it also helps the fashion industry by allowing the best of the best not only to launch their new businesses, but to also make them sustainable in London. 2013 marks the project’s tenth anniversary, and coincides with Bailey’s new position. McDowell did admit that he had Bailey in mind as a potential chair for quite a while, since both he and Burberry are leaders in youth trends and popular fashion. There is no doubt that Fashion Fringe also stands to benefit a great deal from their new association with the Burberry brand.

For his part, Bailey credits his own mentors and inspirations for helping him during the early days of his career in fashion. Previous chairs for Fashion Fringe included heavy hitters such as John Galliano, and Donatella Versace. Past winners of Fashion Fringe have gone on to successful heights, such as Corrie Nielsen, Basso & Brooke, and Jena Theo.

The options available when it comes to women’s jacket styles are numerous. The type of jacket a woman chooses to wear depends on where she is going and the weather outside. A thin, lightweight blazer is a great option for wearing to work when the weather is warm but not hot, but is usually not a great pick for wearing over an evening dress, for example.

Winter jackets come in a number of styles. Brands such as G Star make winter coats with details that are inspired by the military, such as plenty of pockets and fur lining around the hood. Other jacket styles which are perfect for winter feature padding to keep the wearer warm. The jackets may be cropped and hit at the hip for a casual look or fall to mid-thigh for more warmth.

Lightweight jackets play a number of different roles. A lightweight mac keeps a woman dry in the rain. Some styles come in cute colours, such as pink and bright blue, so the wearer looks cute too. Denim jackets with jeans styling are great for relaxed days when the weather is slightly chilly. Trendy denim jackets can be cropped or feature worn or ripped detailing for a grunge-style look.

The blazer is a great jacket to wear in cool but not freezing weather. It is also a great pick for dressing up a casual outfit or for wearing to work. Blazers come in a range of shapes and styles, from tailored coats to more loose fitting styles. Some blazers feature details such as patches on the chest or double-breasted buttons. They may have patches on the elbows as well. Women can find blazers in a range of colours too. Navy blue and black are standard neutral shades. Red blazers, as well as pink or striped blazers are also available for the woman who wants to make a statement.

Retro is officially in and the menswear industry has embraced the trend with gusto. Fashion houses have been creating retro designs with a 21st century twist over the last few seasons and men today have a fabulous choice of retro designs to choose from. They bring enhancement to clothing collections whatever your age and whether retro is new to you or you enjoyed the style first time round.

Currently in vogue are the exciting safari-style jacket and trousers. Fitted, wide-collared, button-down jackets with both diagonal and coin pockets bring the safari style firmly up to date and make it practical for men today. New safari jackets look great in muted jungle shades and can be teamed with twisted chinos for casual wear or straight-leg for a more formal style. Firetrap Clothing has a super range of safari wear for all ages.

Another popular retro look is the military-style wool double-breasted jacket. This jacket, which looked great first time round, has emerged virtually unchanged and remains popular in black, navy and grey.

Graphic t-shirts have not escaped the retro buzz either and are worn by children, teens, young adults and older who proudly wear the picture of their favourite superhero in bold primary colours or as a black and white sketch.

Retro ankle boots are also making a re-appearance on the fashion front. In the old days, ankle boots were most popular in tan brown, but today come in any colour you like, albeit predominantly tan brown.

Before the mid 19th century, clothing was often made by hand. Whether this was done by order through dressmakers or tailors, or made by the individual at home, it was not merely as simple as buying a mass produced item in a high street store.

During the mid 19th century, factory production began to change the way fashion was made, and mass production of goods appeared, as technology developed increasingly. It was in America and Europe that these changes first took place, but ever since then the process has connected countries across the world. Different stages in production can mean that as a garment is made it travels through a variety of countries.

For example, a plan for some shirts could come from a designer in France. The fabric for the clothing could then be sourced in China. This fabric could then be cut and the garment made in a factory in Dubai, with finishing touches being carried out in Germany. From here the clothing could then be brought back to France, or shipped across the world to various different retail outlets for them to sell.

This process of fashion production sees a huge amount of people employed by the industry all over the globe, and in England alone, it is responsible for over 800,000 jobs. As well as this, the fashion business is responsible for making around £21 billion per year. Retail has really exploded in the past few year especially since many brands such as Firetrap, French Connection and AX Paris started selling fashions online making it much more accessible for many to get the latest styles.
