Cheap Ugg boots damaging a generation
Ugg boots have become a popular fashion staple however their £150 price tag has lead to many cheap imitations being made and while Ugg Australia have designed their boots with reinforced heels and insoles for support many cheaper versions do not have this and its worrying podiatrists and chiropodists.
They believe cheap imitation Ugg boots are crippling a generation of fashion victim women due to the lack of support they provide and the rise in popularity with teenage girls and young women is causing a rise in the number of people suffering pains in their feet and knees.
The head of the British College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr Ian Drysdale, believes because the foot does not get the proper support on the inside, it will lead to more ankle, knee, hip and back problems. He said “These boots are not designed for outside wear. Just because something becomes a trend or fashionable doesn’t mean its good or right and that the cheapo copies don’t offer adequate ankle support and as a result, the foot slides around all over the show.” He also added “Because these boots are warm and soft, young girls think they are giving their feet a break. In fact, they are literally breaking their feet.”
Many young people do not realise how much damage they are actually doing to their bodies by constantly wearing the substandard versions, Mike O’Neill, a consultant podiatric surgeon explains. “As the foot slides around, you get wear and tear on the joints on the inside of the foot. The ankle is in the wrong position, the thigh bone also changes position and you get an abnormal movement in the pelvis, which leads to back problems.”
So next time you think about trying to save a few pennies when following fashion trends think about what damage is being done by imitation versions of Ugg boots.
