Tartan is a primarily found in Scotland but can also be found all over the world and in general is made up of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical lines in varying colours. Different Scottish, Irish and Isle of Man families have their own family colours, handed down throughout the generations.
You will find that Scottish kilts that are made from tartan are very rarely seen without any patterns on. There are also many accessories which are associated with kilts and tartan, these include on Plaid Brooches, Ruche Tie Sporrans and Chains and Sgian Dubhs oh and not forgetting Kilt Pins!
Tartan has its place in modern fashions as well, designer Vivienne Westwood uses tartan a lot in her collections and you always see pieces on the highstreet, you could say it never goes out of fashion! So check out Scottishtextiles.org.uk for more on tartan and fashion in general.
